Swedish massage

The massage therapist assigned to you uses their hands, elbows, and forearms to stimulate the superficial layers of the muscles to release tension and promote relaxation. Developed in the 1830s by Swedish fencing instructor, Per Henrik Link, to alleviate his chronic elbow pain, this technique is one of the most popular forms of massage today.

Long strokes, friction, kneading, and tapping movements on the soft tissue of the body help to relax both the body and mind, stimulate nerve endings and blood flow. A traditional Swedish massage involves the whole body and is gentler than a deep tissue massage.

Deep Tissue Massage

The practice of deep tissue massages reaches deeper into the body than a Swedish massage and can help a variety of ailments, from lower back pain to sports injuries. In fact, athletes rely heavily on deep tissue massage to both help prevent, and recover from, injuries.

Credited for establishing the deep tissue massage, a Canadian doctor by the name of Therese Phimmer, self-applied a daily regimen of deep tissue massage and succeeded in curing her leg paralysis. Shortly after, she opened her own clinic in 1949 and pioneered the technique. The massage incorporates long, slow strides and gentle pressure to knotted muscles or problematic areas.

SPORTS Massage

Sports massages are specifically designed to treat musculoskeletal injuries and pain. Sports massage therapy is one of the numerous types of massages designed specifically to treat musculoskeletal injuries and pain. It is also known as “manual therapy” since it involves the manual application of pressure to knead the affected muscles. To some degree, it also involves the manipulation and mobilization of joints. Aside from treatment, this type of massage also helps prevent injuries, enhances muscle performance, and boosts overall athletic performance.

Sports massage can also be classified based on when the treatment is performed. For example, a sports massage administered an hour before a game or activity is called a pre-event massage. For those who need to rest in between games, an inter-event massage is performed. A post-event massage is performed while the athlete cools down and finally; a restorative sports massage is performed during rest days.

FOOT REFLEXOLOGY

In reflexology, pressure is applied to specific reflex points on the foot. These points correspond to organs and areas of the body. The treatment is said to induce a healing response and alleviate certain ailments. With repeated pressure and manipulation of nerve endings, reflexology can help to clear channels of blocked energy. It is said to do so by manipulating the blood flow, nutrients, and nerve impulses. This ultimately improves overall health and balance.
